Future Plans
Troops that just make a normal Move in the Movement Step can make an attack in the Melee Attack step. This is a change from having to Charge to get a melee attack.
Currently readied ranged attacks are at a -1 to hit, for purely nonsensical but game balance reasons. It makes more sense to not have this penalty, UNLESS the shooting troop now has an enemy adjacent to them when they shoot.
Troops can kneel so archers behind them have a clear line of sight.
Kneeling or standing up from kneeling is done in the troop's movement, and costs one extra point of movement to do.
Troops can kneel or stand as a Slide move without provoking an opportunity attack from adjacent enemies, but they remain in that space.
A new movement type. The unit moves its normal movement distance (not double, so 4" for most humanoids) and gets a +2 to melee and ranged defense until the start of their next turn. Note that this movement still provokes Opportunity Attacks as normal. The unit can't do anything in the Spellcasting, Melee Attack, or Ranged Attack steps that turn, with the exception of sustaining existing spells.
Right now, if a unit starts next to an enemy, there is no way for them to make ranged attacks that turn unless they Move away, provoking an opportunity attack (Slide movement doesn't provoke but specifically prevents Ranged attacks for the rest of the turn). Instead, this rule would let that unit make a ranged attack after sliding or moving away but at a -3 to hit. If the ranged attack doesn't use a to-hit roll then the targets get +2 to their To-Wound value and any saving throws associated with the attack.
This isn't a rule so much as revamping Large and Huge creatures to make sure they have Reach or Reach 3 respectively for most of their attacks.
Units with Reach or Reach 3 attacks can use them to make opportunity attacks at provoking creatures within reach of the attack. This would work well for Large and Huge monsters that tend to get ganged up on now, but would make spearmen way more effective than regular soldiers. While historically accurate, I'm not sure that's desirable in a fantasy game. The reach of provoking opportunity attacks could be set to the size of the creature instead of the reach of the weapon, so spearmen would still have to Ready to get a hit in before other melee types moved up.
This would also have the effect that Large or Huge creatures would get to attack units charging them, so any creatures that are doing a Charge don't provoke if they end their movement adjacent.
Add Reach to the sweep attacks of Large or Huge monsters. This wouldn't increase the number of targets, just allow the sweep to change distance from the attacking creature as it swept around. Much easier to put in picture form than to explain here.
